The cast of Maze Runner: The Death Cure think that Dylan O'Brien would be great for one superhero role in particular: Nightwing.
CinemaBlend recently got to sit down with the cast of Maze Runner: The Death Cure shortly before the movie’s release, and given Hollywood’s increasing interest in superhero movies, the topic came up. O’Brien is commonly fantasy-cast as the character of Nightwing by Batman fans, and the interviewer raised this point to the cast’s approval. Interestingly, O’Brien was unaware that Nightwing was a grown-up Robin — which is something that greatly influences his own character arc as a standalone superhero — so O’Brien’s co-star Dexter Darden helped fill the actor in to pitch the concept to him:
“He would be so good… So what happens is, Batman ages out unfortunately, in Gotham, and Robin just kind of grows up and just has the same resources, but a little bit more of a badass kind of edge to him… Nightwing is essentially a 25- to like 30-year-old Robin, and he’s got this sick blue one-piece outfit. Blue, black, and he’s dope.”
Nightwing is dope indeed, and the role could be something that helps O’Brien break out even further as an actor. Hopefully, Darden will end up being his agent when director Chris McKay starts the casting process for the movie.
A Nightwing movie is in development from director Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie) and screenwriter Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) as part of DC’s shared movie universe. While little has been said about the project, McKay has promised that his movie will be significantly more serious than his previous DC movie.
