A Scene Featuring A Possible MCU Reference Was Cut From ‘Deadpool’

20th Century Fox’s Deadpool movie made a few references to Marvel’s cinematic universe when it came out February of 2016. Given Deadpool’s knack for breaking the fourth wall, it only makes sense that he acknowledge his studios’ successful competitor. The film did just that, referencing Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury in the post-credits scene, and featuring an epic fight scene atop a S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier.

These references were awesome, but it turns out that they originally weren’t the only hints at an unofficial connection with the MCU. A deleted scene, discovered by a writer over at CBM, features the infamous Raft prison from Marvel comics. The supervillain correctional facility was featured in Captain America: Civil War earlier this year as the place where members of Team Cap was held after their fight with Team Iron Man at the Leipzig/Halle Airport.

The scene in the Deadpool movie would have featured Ajax, the main villain of the film, returning to the shore after being held in the Raft prison. The prison is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Seeing as how the Raft was a pretty big part of Civil War, it’s possible Marvel told Fox to cut the scene.

Deadpool may have gotten away with a few clear MCU references, but it’s likely Marvel drew the line at Fox showing the Raft prison. It’s also possible that Fox simply didn’t know the Raft would be in Captain America: Civil War, since Deadpool went into production before the MCU film. It’s a bit of a shame they cut the scene, but I’m not too down about it. After all, we still got that incredible Helicarrier reference, which featured Deadpool and Ajax facing off on top of Nick Fury’s favorite way to travel! Maybe when Deadpool 2 comes around, we’ll get another slew of cool MCU references.
