Melissa McCarthy Responds To The ‘Ghostbusters’ Backlash

Melissa McCarthy reflects on the backlash from Paul Fiege’s 2016 Ghostbusters reboot which also starred Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

Fiege’s Ghostbusters struggled at the Box Office and faced backlash for featuring an all-female team. The film also launched Ghost Corps, a production company set to oversea the franchise and start a cinematic universe. An animated series was in the works and has since been shelved along with a sequel to the 2016 reboot to focus on an animated feature. McCarthy spoke with Yahoo! while promoting her latest film, Can You Ever Forgive Me? where she was asked about the backlash from the film:

“I just don’t know why people are so afraid of women. It’s fascinating to me. There’s one criticism in particular that she still can’t wrap her head around. “If a movie 35 years later is ‘ruining your childhood,’ don’t blame us — you’ve got your own issues. As the mom of two daughters, I just always say, ‘There you go. Be you. Don’t back down.’”
