‘Men In Black: International’ Almost Lost Director F. Gary Gray During Production

A new report sheds some light on problems that occurred on the Men in Black: International set that almost resulted in director F. Gary Gray leaving the project.

Men in Black: International bombed over the weekend with $30 million and currently holds a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s failure might have to do with what happened during filming. Numerous rewrites and disagreements occurred between director F. Gary Gray and longtime producer Walter Parkes. The report goes on to say the original vision of the film was:

“Edgier and more timely, tying the story to the current debate surrounding immigration. At one point, a music group a la The Beatles were to be the bad guys, with four people merging into one villain.”

F. Gary Gray almost exited the project, but was convinced by Sony to stay. However, Walter Parkes had final cut on Men in Black: International and even directed parts of it. Post production was reportedly smooth with Walter Parkes’ cut chosen over F. Gary Gray’s. The report adds that Sony still has plans for the Men in Black franchise.
