Michael Bay Reveals Why He Would Not Direct A Marvel Sequel

As director Michael Bay continues to work on Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth installment of the live-action Transformers franchise, some filmgoers have wondered why the filmmaker behind a series known for big-budget, action-packed spectacles of good vs. evil has yet to try his hand at a superhero film. During a press set visit for his final entry in the Transformers franchise, Bay discussed the superhero genre with journalists and addressed why he would never direct a sequel to a Marvel Studio film.

Michael Bay’s reluctance to take on a superhero sequel is not due to an aversion to the genre, as the filmmaker expressed his approval of Marvel’s work.

“I really liked Civil War. I like a lot of the Marvel movies. When I saw Iron Man, it broke a lot of new ground for me, and it was a great character. Funny, witty, I liked that about it.”

Michael Bay did express some concern about the direction of the genre. Collider reports:

Though he does “wonder where [superhero movies] are going to go,” noting that Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War as having “almost the same setup.”

Despite being a fan of Marvel’s films, Michael Bay explained that he would not direct a film that was already part of an established universe.

“I wouldn’t want to, it’s not my thing, it’s just not my gig. I don’t ever wanna take someone like a third of something or second of something. I gotta do my own thing cause the most fun is when a real director creates the world. You know, you talk to Ridley Scott, one our favorite things to do is to create the world. Steven Spielberg, create the world. That is what it’s about. If I were to do something I would have to redo it my way.”

Considering there has been some debate as to whether or not a shared universe of films can allow a director to have complete creative control of a project, it may be understandable that Bay would not want to take on a project that may depend on the plans of other works and filmmakers.
