Michael Fassbender Says An ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Trilogy Is Planned If The First Is Successful

Everyone involved in the Assassin’s Creed movie wants to make sequels. You know, I know it, your mom’s mistress Dorothy knows it, and the Fox execs know it. Michael Fassbender, saint that he is, revealed they planned for such an occasion. Talking to CinemaBlend, he described the first film as the “origin” of his protagonist Callum Lynch’s story, with ideas for two further films to complete the classic trilogy structure.

This is the sort of origin of his story. We have an idea of where he’s going to go over the next two films. We kind of did a three-film arc. We’ll wait and see how people respond to this, but for sure, we have an idea of where he’s going to go next.

Most actors’ contracts with films with franchise-potential include sequel clauses, often for two, so this trilogy idea is baked even into the legalese of Hollywood dealmaking. Michael Fassbender for his part shepherded the video game adaptation from conceptionto the screen as a producer and is clearly invested in not only the film, but making more of them. It’s a refreshing dedication from a marquee actor on a blockbuster project.

The marketing has sold the film as a stylized if a bit generic or opaque sci-fi action thriller. While any sequel obviously depends on the first one being a success, they need to go weirder with the next one, in my opinion. Director Justin Kurzel is already giving details on how he’d like to shake up the far-reaching historical periods with something more current, like a Cold War noir set in 1950s America. That’s unique and exciting. As awesome as it would be to see Michael Fassbender as a pirate, a fedora would suit him just as nicely..

Assassin’s Creed hits theaters next Wednesday.
