Manchester by the Sea actress Michelle Williams is in talks for the female lead role in Sony's upcoming Venom movie starring Tom Hardy.
The Marvel film is being directed by Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer, with Hardy on board as Eddie Brock. The cast also includes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed in an undisclosed role.
According to Variety, Williams is playing a district attorney and potential love interest to Hardy’s Brock. Other actresses that were said to be in the mix for the role included Sylvia Hoeks, Kylie Bunbury and Kate Mara, but Williams won the role after Sony’s Tom Rothman saw her performance in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World.
Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) penned the Venom script. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing, with Palak Patel overseeing the project for the studio.
As previously reported, Venom is completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and won’t feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The project is intended to launch Sony’s Marvel Universe, which includes a project featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat.
Venom is currently slated to hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
