Mike Colter Opens Up About ‘Luke Cage’ Cancellation & Possible Return

Luke Cage star Mike Colter opened up in a recent interview about the Netflix cancellation and a possible return for the hero for hire.

Luke Cage was the second Marvel series to be cancelled by Netflix last year, which came as a shock to many fans of the MCU. Iron First and Daredevil have also been cancelled with The Punisher and Jessica Jones likely to follow after their upcoming seasons. Mike Colter has played Luke Cage in two seasons of his own series, The Defenders, and Jessica Jones. The actor revealed in an interview with ComicBookm.com he wasn’t as shocked as most people when the series was officially cancelled:

“It was bittersweet. It kinda did catch me off guard. I don’t think I was as shocked as most people were because I was a little closer to it. There were some things, some tell tale signs, that were not quite feeling right for me. Although we had an internal pick up, amongst a certain amount of people who were close to the project, and we were moving forward with the writing and writing the group writers room, et cetera. There was a lot of stalling. There was a lot of things that didn’t feel quite right. Then, deadlines. One deadline would come and it would go. Another deadline would come, it would go. There were some things that started to feel a little odd. So, when it happened, I was like, ‘Eh.’ It wasn’t that much of a shock. But yeah, still shock.”

With the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemingly coming to an end, many fans have hoped the shows will continue on another steaming service like Hulu or Disney+. However, it was revealed in a report from Variety that the Netflix-Marvel characters cannot appear outside of the streaming service until 2020. Mike Colter went on to say as much when asked if he will return:

“I don’t know that it’s something that fans can do, necessarily. I think it’s a real network/studio thing. I think it’ll resolve itself, one way or the other. There just needs to be some time. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe that’s it. But I don’t think the fans… as much as the fans — the outpouring of the fans is very touching and well received and it’d be appreciated — I don’t think it’s gonna make anything happen, but it’s nice to know that. I think, ultimately, if it comes back, it’ll probably come back because of the fans demand for it. I don’t think that their work is going in vain. It just may not happen as soon as they want it to.”

Do you think Luke Cage could return? Will the character be rebooted? Comment below!

After clearing his name, Luke Cage has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain.

Luke Cage stars Mike Colter as the titular hero, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Theo Rossi as Hernan Alvarez/Shades, Gabrielle Dennis as Tilda Johnson, Mustafa Shakir as John McIver/Bushmaster and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard/Black Mariah.

Luke Cage is now available on Netflix.
