Why Mike Mignola Said No To Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Hellboy 3’ Comic Book

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola revealed why he said no to Guillermo del Toro’s idea of turning his scrapped sequel into a comic book.

Hellboy returned to theaters this year in the form of a reboot to disappointing results. The reboot was plagued by production issues and resulted in a box office bomb. Before Lionsgate moved forward with the reboot, Guillermo del Toro was planning an ambitious sequel to Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

A large reason why that film never happened had to do with it needing a massive budget. Many dead franchises have continued in comic book form and Guillermo del Toro tried to do the same with his scrapped Hellboy 3. However, creator Mike Mignola revealed to Screen Rant that why he wasn’t keen on Guillermo del Toro’s idea:

“I think del Toro mentioned it to me once, and I said no. I think, let the comics be the comics. Comics are confusing enough for people. Let’s not have two different versions of the Hellboy comic out there. My vote would be (to say) no.”

Here’s the synopsis for the Hellboy reboot:

Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.

Directed by Neil Marshall from a script co-written by character creator Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby, and Christopher Golden, Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, with Daniel Dae Kim.

Hellboy will be released in theaters on April 12, 2019.
