The connective tissue that has united the MonsterVerse between the mostly-unrelated Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island is Monarch, a S.H.I.E.L.D.-like organization that’s dedicated to ensuring that the world has protection from gigantic monsters that are hidden within the Earth and are rising again. Fittingly for an organization with the name of Monarch, one of the monsters they’ve been keeping track of is named Mothra, who is a giant moth (duh) who traditionally serves as a guardian to the planet. While there’s no word as of yet if this version of the kaiju is going to be benevolent as well, the organization’s ARG-like Twitter has just released an image of an ancient stone carving portraying her.
Interestingly, Mothra can be seen with an egg above her and her twin larvae to her sides, suggesting that the MonsterVerse might be taking influence from the original Godzilla vs. Mothra in having the planetary guardian have twin heirs that could succeed her should she die in battle. So perhaps we might not meet the original Mothra in this movie, but one of her descendants. In any case, it’s a neat nod to Mothra’s history in the Godzilla franchise and a clear sign that WB and Legendary are taking paying tributes to old movies featuring men in rubber suits completely seriously, and that should lead to another fun installment in this budding franchise.
