According to Chinese actress and one of the star’s of the live-action Mulan, Gong Li, Disney’s budget on the live-action remake is north of $300 Million. Which would make it the second biggest budget for a live-action film behind the worldwide phenomena that was Avengers: Endgame, which had a budget of over $350 Million.
Gong Li made the claim in an interview on Weibo, which was translated on Twitter by Gavin Feng on Twitter.
The House of Mouse has spent millions on their live-action remakes and has hit home runs every time. The most successful of the recent live-action Disney remakes was 2017’s Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson (Belle) and Dan Stevens (Beast) which did pretty well raking in over $1 billion at the box office on a $160 million dollar budget. The film followed the success of 2016’s The Jungle Book which brought in over $900 million on a $175 million dollar budget. The next film in line is the live-action Lion King that releases July 19th of this year followed by Mulan.
It seems as if Disney has found the formula to creating successful remakes of their fan-favorite animated films by waiting for the right time to release them in theaters so that the original fan base would go back to watch for nostalgic purposes and bring their families with them. It goes to show you again why Disney is the powerhouse that it is today and it’s definitely no mistake.
