Disney president of production Sean Bailey recently clarified that the live-action remake of 'Mulan' is 'not currently intended' to be a musical.
“I don’t know where that’s come from,” Caro said when asked about word that the new take on Mulan will lack songs. “We’ve never talked about songs, and no decision has been made.”
However, Entertainment Weekly got a hold of Disney president of production Sean Bailey and asked him about the possibility of including songs in the film. His response was that Mulan is “not currently intended to be [a musical].” However, he did add that “nothing is off the table.”
As of right now it sounds like there is no definitive answer to whether or not the movie will include beloved songs like “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and “Reflection,” but Bailey’s comments make it sound like the prospect is unlikely … for the moment anyway.
If Mulan does end up foregoing the songs, it will mark a diversion from Disney’s current strategy. Both Beauty and the Beast and last year’s The Jungle Book incorporated the original animated film’s songs, and Beauty and the Beast even added a few new ones. Mulan not having songs would be quite the departure and a little bit of a shock, but only time will tell what direction Disney decides to take.
What do you think? Would you like to see the original film’s songs, or would you like it to be strictly “a big, girly martial arts epic” – as Caro previously called it – without music?
Mulan is currently set to hit theaters November 2, 2018.
