‘The Mummy’ Reboot Will Terrify, Says Screenwriter

Screenwriter Jon Spaihts is on a roll. The Prometheus writer’s most recent film Doctor Strange (co-wrote with Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill), is already tearing up the box office (already making $325.4 million globally). His next film in the highly anticipated Passengers film featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. After that, there will be the reboot of The Mummy, headlined by Tom Cruise. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy will be the first film in the “Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe,” which will feature all the classic monsters including The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, Van Helsing, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Bride of Frankenstein.

Spaihts recently shared his thoughts on the next iteration of The Mummy, and how he thinks audiences will respond to the upcoming film.

“In The Mummy, I think we’re going to see the first Mummy film in the entire Universal canon with the true power to terrify. The earliest [Boris] Karloff and Bela Lugosi Mummy movies were scary in a small way, perhaps a dated way. They were almost parlor movies. Subsequent movies have been more swashbuckling. This one is going to have all of that action and adventure, but a legitimate power to terrify. I think that’s going to be the new experience of that film.”

If this is the case, it would be a departure from the previous The Mummy franchise, which was more “action adventure” than horror and terror. The previous franchise acted more like an Indiana Jones film than the original.

The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017. The cast includes Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Courtney B. Vance, Annabelle Wallis, Marwan Kenzari, and Jake Johnson.
