‘The Mummy’: Sofia Boutella Discusses Her Costume

With Universal’s The Mummy hitting cinema screens this weekend, Sofia Boutella discussed her various costumes in the film. One of the most quintessential movie monsters of all time, The Mummy is quite literally made by its costume, so it’s key that the costume designers nail it. When speaking with Yahoo Movies, Boutella dropped many interesting secrets regarding her costume and the film’s production. One interesting tidbit is that she had to go through 24 screen tests to find the perfect costume.

In the film, Boutella has four different looks in the film, with each adding its own unique flair to the film’s mythos. For example, in her final look, Boutella is seen sporting symbols which were painted on her skin. The symbols actually come from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, but Boutella’s sense of humor kicked in when she and her costume design team exchanged words:

“As a joke, me and the team of lovely make-up artists liked to say that it’s an Ancient Egyptian pancake recipe.”

The film stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”
