‘The Mummy’ Targeting $35M Opening Weekend

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal Pictures’ reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella is currently targeting a low $35 million opening weekend at the domestic box office according to NRG, one of the entertainment industry’s most respected polling services.

The film which cost the studio $125 million to produce after tax rebates is set to launch a shared cinematic Dark Universe full of gods and monsters based on the classic monster flicks produced by Universal but insiders say the studio is not worried about the domestic debut of The Mummy as Cruise himself remains a major box office draw overseas.

The Mummy will feature Boutella as Princess Ahmanet, an Egyptian Princess who was imprisoned when she summoned a great evil and murdered her father after he failed to uphold his promise to make her pharaoh after he sired a son. The ancient evil is unleashed on the world after Ahmanet’s tomb is discovered by Nick Morton (Cruise) and at the center of it all will be Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll, the head of a society dedicated to fighting monsters known as Prodigium that will serve to place the film within a larger context of the Dark Universe that has been dealing with monsters for a very long time.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe. Here’s the official synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
