Naomi Watts Breaks Silence On HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel

Naomi Watts shared her excitement for joining the cast of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel which is currently in development while speaking at the Sundance Film Festival.

With HBO gearing up for its final season of the hit fantasy series set to return this April, the premium cabler has its sights set on expanding the Game of Thrones universe with its first-ever spin-off. Speaking at Sundance, with Variety, Naomi Watts finally broke her silence on joining the prequel’s cast in the lead role:

“It’s a fantastic world, isn’t it? I think there’s so many brilliant elements to that series that make it very exciting, very appealing. I don’t want to dig myself into a big hole here. All I want to say is it’s very exciting…I’ll say that again and again and again — and nothing else.”

Plot details for the still untitled series have not been revealed but the official logline is as follows: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

In addition to Naomi Watts, the cast also includes Josh Whitehouse (Poldark), Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Shella Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.

S.J. Clarkson is set to direct the series pilot from a script written by Jane Goldman. Goldman serves as showrunner along with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin who is executive producing the series with Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman. The pilot is one of four projects HBO revealed to be in the works with Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad MenThe Leftovers) previously announced to develop other potential spin-offs.

The Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts is expected to premiere as early as 2020.

Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Liam Cunningham as Ser Davos Seaworth, Carice van Houten as Melisandre, Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Conleth Hill as Varys, Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark, Jerome Flynn as Bronn, Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont, and Hannah Murray as Gilly.
