‘Bright’: Netflix Orders Sequel To Will Smith Movie Ahead Of Release

Netflix's upcoming original film Bright starring Will Smith has yet to be released but the streaming service has already ordered a sequel.

Netflix’s upcoming original film Bright has yet to be released but the streaming service has already ordered a sequel.

In a new report, Bloomberg has confirmed that Netflix has committed to a sequel, making Bright the first movie franchise in streaming history. The move comes reportedly as a warning to studios and theater owners that the streaming service has its sights set on a piece of the global box office.

The R-rated supernatural cop thriller from director David Ayer (Suicide Squad) follows Will Smith as a Los Angeles police officer in an alternate present where monsters walk the Earth alongside humans. Smith is forced to work with an Orc (Joel Edgerton) in order to find a powerful wand that dangerous forces are willing to kill for.

The film stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Edgard Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Brad William Henke, Lucy Fry, Chris Browning, and Kenneth Choi. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been co-existing since the beginning of time. Bright is genre-bending action movie that follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward (Will Smith) and Jakoby (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine patrol night and encounter a darkness that will ultimately alter the future and their world as they know it.

Bright hits Netflix this Friday, December 22.
