Fans were surprised when Netflix canceled Iron Fist roughly one month after the second season premiered without providing an official reason and were taken back again when the streaming service made the same decision about Luke Cage the following week. Now, the San Francisco-based analytics company Jumpshot has examined the viewing behavior and activity of their U.S. members to understand how the Netflix original series’ are performing and their data may offer insight into viewers’ responses to the Marvel television shows.
According to Jumpshot’s data, Iron Fist and Luke Cage lost two-thirds of their respective audiences between their first and second seasons. Iron Fist lost 64% of its viewers compared to the first season while Luke Cage suffered a loss of 59%. The following index from Jumpshot reveals how Iron Fist and Luke Cage performed in their first weeks compared to the second season of Daredevil, the first series they measured, and the viewership drop experienced by both shows:
Daredevil season 2: 100
Luke Cage season 1: 92
Iron Fist season 1: 80
Luke Cage season 2: 38
Iron Fist season 2: 29
It should be noted that the data is limited, as it is specific to the United States and based on clicks as opposed to viewing habits.
According to the data, viewership for Iron Fist dropped back to baseline levels in less than a month.
Missing for months, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reemerges a broken man, putting into question his future as both vigilante Daredevil and lawyer Matthew Murdock. Daredevil season 3 will be released on October 19, 2018, on Netflix.
