Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha will produce the Once Piece adaptation, which has been given the green light for 10-episodes by Netflix. The One Piece adaptation marks the second collaboration between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with the first being behind the streaming service’s upcoming Cowboy Bebop series.
Lost and The X-Files scribe Steven Maeda will serve as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer on Netflix’s Once Piece series. Joining Maeda as a writer and executive producer will be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage alum Matt Owens.
Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements will join Once Piece author Eiichiro Oda as executive producers. The One Piece adaptation will be a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with the streaming service handling the physical production.
The manga series follows Monkey D. Luffy as he leads his crew of pirates in a search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as the “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King. Their journey brings them to all kinds of exotic islands and oceans across the Grand Line.
The One Piece manga led to a multimedia franchise that includes a festival film produced by Japan’s Production I.G and an anime series from Toei Animation. To date, over 460 million copies of the One Piece manga have been published worldwide.
