Netflix Responds To Steven Spielberg’s Attack On Its Streaming Service

Netflix has issued a response to Steven Spielberg’s efforts to bring about new rules that would prevent streaming services from being ineligible for the Academy Awards.

Last week, it was reported Steven Spielberg is planning to propose new rules that would prevent films that debut on Netflix or other streaming services from qualifying at the Academy Awards. Spielberg, who is the current governor of the Academy’s directors branch and plans to propose these new rules at its annual post-Oscars meeting, argues that Netflix films and other features from streaming services should qualify for Emmy Awards instead of Oscars. Many filmgoers and Hollywood insiders have taken issue with Steven Spielberg’s assessment and Netflix issued a response to the news on their official Twitter account.

While Netflix did not mention Steven Spielberg or the rule changes he plans to introduce, it did note the value in the service it provides to those without access to theaters or filmmakers who may otherwise have a difficult time getting their work produced or distributed:

We love cinema. Here are some things we also love:

-Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters

-Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time

-Giving filmmakers more ways to share art.

These things are not mutually exclusive.

Where do you stand on this issue? Do you side with Steven Spielberg or should Netflix film continue to be eligible for Oscars? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
