New Drama Based On ‘Freaks Of The Heartland’ Dark Horse Comic Coming To MTV

A new report from Deadline confirms that MTV has acquired the rights and green lit production on a new drama series based on the Freaks of the Heartland graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics. The graphic novel was written by Steve Niles, with art by Greg Ruth. David Gordon Green is attached to the project to produce and direct, pending his availability.

Freaks of the Heartland is a dark fairy tale graphic novel that takes place in a rural town located in America’s heartland. The town contains a very dark secret, however, as one family has been hiding a “freak” (named Will) in their barn. The “freak”, however, is actually the families deformed son that the father had been hiding away from the rest of society. When Will is discovered by a local sheriff, a struggle ensues and the sheriff ends up killing the father. Will and his brother Trevor are then framed for the murder and go on the run, eventually figuring out Will isn’t the only “freak” in the town. They also discover the same sheriff that found Will had killed a number of the other deformed children years prior.Trevor ends up being the only one who can stop the sheriff from killing all the rest of the innocent deformed children.

Mike Richardson & Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse Entertainment will be executive producing with Niles and the Gotham Group. Davey and Sattler will serve as co-executive producers.

Freaks of the Heartland is a result of Dark Horse Entertainment’s first-look deal with UCP. With that agreement, both companies together have sold Harrow County, a drama adaptation of the Dark Horse comic coming to the Syfy channel, with Becky Kirsch writing the script.
