‘New Gods’ Director Ava DuVernay Gives Update On DC Film’s Script

New Gods director Ava DuVernay gives DC Comics fans an update on the film’s script.

A few months back, it was announced that Ava DuVernay would be working on the New Gods script with comic book writer Tom King. As we hit the holiday season, Ava DuVernay gives a fan an update regarding the status of the film’s script, in which she invokes New Gods character Big Barda to describe her creative process with Tom King:

Before she signed on to direct New Gods for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films, Ava DuVernay was once asked about her favorite superhero. She revealed that it was in fact Big Barda for “Many reasons.”

Ava DuVernay has made an impact on the industry throughout this decade. Whether it is her acclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma or her Emmy Award-winning miniseries When They See Us, she is beloved and respected in the industry. She was previously approached by Marvel Studios to direct Black Panther but turned down the opportunity over creative differences.

Ava DuVernay is set to direct New Gods from a script written by Tom King. The director boarded the project in the spring of 2018 and with Tom King now attached, the film finally appears to be moving forward.

Plot details remain under wraps, however, the film will be based on characters created and designed by Jack Kirby. Ava DuVernay has previously teased Big Barda, along with Highfather, Orion and even Darkseid for New Gods. The film has been rumored to focus on Mister Miracle and Big Barda trying to escape the hellish planet known as Apokolips. There will also be political conflict between Apokolips and its rival world New Genesis.

Warner Bros. and DC Films have many other projects in development, including The Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, and SupergirlNew Gods does not yet have a release date.
