Fox's upcoming X-Men spin-off, New Mutants, is set to begin shooting early next year. Has the film's director confirmed the main antagonist?
It is common knowledge to (mostly) everyone that Boone is a huge fan of the X-Men. The director has been updating his Instagram account with panels and pictures of his favourite X-Men and New Mutants comics. So, it should not come as any surprise that Boone has delved rather deep to develop the essential New Mutants arc. The director, along with his best friend/co-writer, Knate Gwaltney revealed:
“We had loved this X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants. We had loved Bill Sienkiewicz’s run with Chris Claremont that had Demon Bear. It was really dark, interesting, and different from the typical X-Men stories that we had read.
After I made The Fault in Our Stars, we made Fox a comic book. It walked them through a trilogy of New Mutant films that would build on each other. We used this program called Comic Life, and took all the images we had loved from the series and strung them together to show them the movie we wanted to do.
We brought it to Simon [Kinberg] and he really liked it. We’ve been going for the past year and a half to get it ready, and I’m about to go location scout and we have a release date now.”
Interestingly, Boone and Gwaltney actually develop an entire trilogy when they pitched the franchise to Fox and Simon Kinberg. Everything that has come out of this movie so far has been optimistic. You cannot go wrong with a young talent like Boone. Hopefully, Fox and Kinberg allow the director to make his movie, and we don’t have a repeat of the Josh Trank situation. What do you guys think? Are you excited for New Mutants? What do you think of Demon Bear as the film’s antagonist?
New Mutants has no scheduled release date, but expect it to hit sometime in 2018.
