It seems James McAvoy will not be returning as Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming X-Men film New Mutants from director Josh Boone.
Both Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) were confirmed earlier today to have boarded the cast for New Mutants. Each star was long rumored to have been eyed for their roles along with McAvoy reprising his role as Professor X and Nat Wolff joining the franchise as Cannonball but according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Bory’s Kit, sources close to the project say that McAvoy and Wolff will not be appearing in the upcoming film. You can check out his tweets below.
Cannonball will still be included in the film as the picture will feature the angst-driven adventures of the teen mutants including the aforementioned Cannonball along with Magik (Joy) and Wolfsbane (Williams) as well as Moonstar and lastly Sunspot, who was recently rumored to be set for an introduction in the upcoming Deadpool sequel set to debut June 1, 2018, however, Deadpool and Deadpool 2 screenwriter Rhett Reese shut that rumor down.
So what do you think? Are you excited for the new addition to the X-Men franchise? Are you disappointed McAvoy may not be appearing as Professor X? Or do you think New Mutants is better off distancing itself from the confusing continuity established in the previous X-Men films? Let us know in the comments below.
Production on the film is expected to begin this July with a script written by Boone along with his writing partner, Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt will produce the project.
New Mutants hits in theaters on April 13, 2018.
