‘New Mutants’ Director Talks Rating & Confirms Team Won’t Wear Costumes

The first trailer for New Mutants offered fans a glimpse at a much darker and grounded entry in the X-Men film series, prompting many to wonder if the film would follow in the footsteps of Deadpool and Logan by aiming for an R rating. In an interview with Empire Magazine, director Josh Boone discussed the New Mutants rating and confirmed that the team of young characters will not be donning the colorful costumes featured in the comics.

Boone confirmed that there will be no costumes while discussing how New Mutants will be different from previous X-Men films:

“There are no costumes. That alone makes it different. They can’t be with the other kids at the X-Mansion. They’re too f***ed up. They’ve all killed people, whether intentionally or unintentionally.”

The director also revealed that the film will be rated PG-13, though he hinted that it will push the limits of the rating:

“This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.”

Plot details are currently under wraps, though the trailer indicates that The New Mutantswill center on five young mutants discovering their powers while being involuntarily held in a secret facility. The film is said to feature more horror elements than previous X-Men projects and will focus on the personal conflicts of the main characters.

New Mutants will be directed by Josh Boone and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Moonstar and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

New Mutants is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on February 22, 2019.
