Fox’s ‘The New Mutants’ Could End Up On Disney+

Fox’s young adult X-Men horror film The New Mutants may be finding a home on Disney’s new streaming service Disney+ as opposed to actually releasing in theaters.

This week, Fox delivered a fantastic second trailer to their next chapter in the X-Men franchise with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The film is set to release after the Disney-Fox merger and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were able to catch subtle MCU labels on some of the mysterious foot soldiers holding our heroes captive.

Some are quick to forget but X-Men: Dark Phoenix isn’t the last X-Men franchise film to release under Fox’s banner. The New Mutants is scheduled to release later this year. The question is, of course, will it actually release? New Mutants has already had two release changes. One in April 2018 and the other February of this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s possible that The New Mutants could end up releasing under the Disney-Marvel banner on Disney’s new streaming service Disney+. However, it’s also reported that the film has yet to go through re-shoots. It’s been said that none are scheduled as of yet so there’s no telling if the supposed re-shoots will affect the film’s release date once again. The film has also been previously rumored to release on Hulu as well.

The heroes of the X-Men franchise are back on the big screen this June with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Here’s a brief synopsis of what to expect:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019.

Directed by Josh Boone from a script co-written by Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.

The New Mutants is scheduled to hit theaters August 2. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the X-Men.
