For the last few years, the Danish auteur has been adamant in his desire to create a film focused on Batman’s female counterpart, and he still seems enthusiastic about the idea. While promoting his new Amazon series Too Old to Die Young, Nicolas Winding Refn spoke to Collider about the possibility of making large tentpole projects like a comic book adaptation. He talked about why he tries not to get overly concerned with projects that ultimately don’t come to fruition, as well as why he feels he hasn’t been the right person to spearhead a big studio film:
“Well I’ve never had anything fall through. Projects that have come to me or that I’ve been approached about – I’ve always decided not to do them at the end. I’ve always just felt that I wasn’t the right person for it.”
While he hasn’t tackled anything like a superhero movie before, Nicolas Winding Refn seems very interested. In fact, he says he would still love to direct a movie circulating around Batgirl in the DC Universe.
“It doesn’t mean it won’t happen. I would love to do one of those comic book movies. Me and Batgirl – it’s like we coexist. If it comes and it feels right and I can do my version of it or I can be part of a contribution to that – great. But if it’s not, I’ll just go make something else.”
Nicolas Winding Refn even teased that he already knows who he wants to play her:
“I know who’s going to play (Batgirl).”
Now that it looks like Warner Brothers is willing to be more experimental with their DC properties, particularly with the upcoming release of Joker directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, maybe the studio would consider Refn’s stylish proposal for the popular character.
