Nightflyers From George R.R. Martin Is Heading To Series At Syfy

Nightflyers, the 1980 novella from George R.R. Martin, received a series order from Syfy today, who also announced the cast, to be led by Gretchen Mol.

George R.R. Martin is a busy man, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. While the Game of Thrones author continues work on the next installment of that epic book series, along with two other potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, Syfy has confirmed its moving forward with Nightflyers, an adaptation of a 1980 novella written by Martin.

A film adaptation was released in 1987 to little fanfare, but with Game of Thrones’ consistent success on HBO, it was only a matter of time before networks began investigating other Martin stories to adapt for television. Syfy has been circling the series for quite some time, putting a pilot in production in May before picking it up in June. The show was unofficially picked up in September as part of ongoing negotiations with Netflix to become co-producers, which now has first-run rights outside of the U.S.

Nightflyers will be a drama that follows eight scientists and a powerful telepath who board the Nightflyer ship and journey to the edges of our solar system in the hopes of making contact with alien life. The crew begins to question each other after a chilling and violent event begins to take place, proving that surviving the journey will be harder than anyone could have predicted.

Daniel Cerone, showrunner of the short-lived Constantine on NBC, will serve as the Nightflyers showrunner. Jeff Buhler, a writer mostly known for his horror output, such as The Midnight Meat Train starring Bradley Cooper, penned the pilot script. The show will star Gretchen Mol as Dr. Agatha Matheson, Eoin Macken as Karl D’Branin, David Ajala as Roy Eris, Sam Strike as Thale, Maya Eshet as Lommie, Angus Sampson as Rowan, Jodie Turner-Smith as Melantha Jhirl, and Brian F. O’Byrne as Auggie.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for much more on Nightflyers as the series develops!
