While Spider-Man: Homecoming is Sony's most anticipated movie of 2017, the media company has opted to promote the film Life at the Super Bowl instead.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Sony paid up to get some ad space at the Super Bowl pre-game. While many assumed that the ad space would be used by Sony to promote their biggest film of the year, Spider-Man: Homecoming, it turns out that a smaller, nearer movie is going to be promoted instead.
Trailer Track is reporting that the sci-fi feature Life is going to serve as Sony’s big push for the game. In fact, the movie is slated to be shown just before it starts and then immediately after the event wraps up.
The news: Deadline are reporting that spots for Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller Life will ‘bookend’ the game.
Our expectations: The trade previously reported that Sony will have one spot pre-game, so it appears Life is the only film they’re promoting. No Spider-Man: Homecoming then, it seems.
While this will no doubt disappoint those of you who were hoping that we’d get our next look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the web-head on Super Bowl Sunday, it makes sense considering that the movie will be released five months after the big game.
Usually a four-month wait between the game and the movie is considered pushing it, considering how expensive it is to buy ads for the game. So with that in mind, it probably makes more sense for the next Spider-Man trailer to drop sometime in March.
Life will be released on March 24, 2017. Spider-Man: Homecoming will arrive on July 7, 2017.
