Olivia Munn Gives Her Two Cents On A Psylocke Solo Outing

Between Deadpool and Gambit, Fox seems to have at least a couple of ideas for spin-offs within their X-Men universe. Their first attempt at a spin-off, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, did not receive the best of reviews. Its sequel was somewhat better received, yet many reactions were still fairly mixed. But early reactions to Deadpool have been great, and it looks as if Fox is really hitting a new stride with this franchise.

If this is to lead to more spin-offs, X-Men: Apocalypse actress Olivia Munn has a few ideas regarding how Psylocke could be featured in a solo outing. Director Bryan Singer has stated in the past that Olivia Munn is extremely knowledgeable in regard to her character, and was reportedly responsible for ensuring that her costume was truthful to that of her comic book counterpart.

Olivia Munn believes that, if Psylocke were to receive her own picture, it should most definitely be an origin story.

“If Psylocke had the chance to tell her story, it would be great to start with the genesis.”

More specifically, Munn believes that we should see something of the character’s tragic history.

“We jump in the days right before all of her family is taken out and we have an understanding of what she had to lose, then her figuring out her powers and how powerful she is.”

This power should be on full display in X-Men: Apocalypse, and Olivia Munn has had no shortage of training to prepare herself physically. If her idea were ever used, she would be able to channel some of this training experience into her origin story. Psylocke’s ability is to form weapons out of psionic energy, and it took a bit of work to decide how this ability would work in fight sequences. And while Munn may be the resident Psylocke expert on set, she credits actor James McAvoy (Charles Xavier) with one particular revelation that has informed the character’s fight scenes.

“The thing about sword work is that you’re always keeping somebody off, like they don’t really know what’s happening…and so, [McAvoy] was like, ‘Well, you can really throw them off if you were going from your real sword to your psychic sword, and just switching hands.’”

Psylocke’s character will not necessarily be 100% truthful to the comics, but Olivia Munn has done her best to make sure that she has been portrayed as accurately as possible. No origin story is currently on the docket, but that’s not to say Munn won’t get her way if her character is well-received when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on March 27.
