X-Men: Apocalypse star Oscar Isaac has some painful memories from his time filming the movie as the titular villain.
Apocalypse is a film that caught quite a bit of flack months before it was even released. The first time fans got a glimpse of Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse, the internet went wild with comparisons to Ivan Ooze and other lower-grade supervillains. Whereas in the comics Apocalypse has a very intimidating design, the film’s portrayal of the character made him appear silly, which Isaac probably wasn’t happy about considering his horror stories from the set.
While recently speaking to GQ, Isaac opened up about his time on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse and no matter how much you hate that movie, Isaac probably hates it more. If you’ve never had to wear crazy prosthetics like Isaac had to wear for the film or other actors have to wear in various monster films, then you may not realize how long and tedious of a process it can be. Isaac began by explaining the equipment that he had to wear while in the latex.
“Apocalypse, that was excruciating. I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening. That I was going to be encased in glue, latex, and a 40-pound suit, that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times.”
The chaos didn’t stop there though. Isaac went on to explain the painful process of actually having to film scenes and what he had to do in-between takes.
“I was like, ‘oh I get to work with these great actors that I like so much’ but I couldn’t even see them because I couldn’t move my head. And I had to sit on a specially designed saddle, because that’s the only thing I could really sit on, and I would be rolled into a cooling tent in-between takes.”
Apparently, the worst part was yet to come. Isaac then went on to elaborate on what he felt was the worst part of the experience–taking the suit off.
“And every time I moved, it was just like rubber and plastic squeaking, so everything I said had to be dubbed later as well. And then getting it off was the worst part, because they just had to kind of scrape it off for hours and hours.”
Isaac may be done with the franchise but next year, fans will be able to see two long-awaited X-Men films on the big screen. Both New Mutants and Dark Phoenix have had their release dates bumped multiple times but now Dark Phoenix is finally releasing next June, followed by New Mutants in August.
