Oscar Isaac Says ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Deals With Leia In ‘A Beautiful Way’

Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac teases Leia’s presence in Star Wars: Episode IX and praises how the character is handled following Carrie Fisher’s death.

It was revealed in August that Episode IX will feature unused footage of Fisher’s Leia from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to give the character a satisfying end. Filming is underway and Isaac is currently taking a break from shooting to promote his latest film, At Eternity’s Gate. In an interview with Daily Beast, Isaac talked about Fisher’s absence being felt on set:

“The story deals with that quite a bit. It’s a strange thing to be on the set and to be speaking of Leia and having Carrie not be around. There’s definitely some pain in that. There’s a looseness and an energy to the way that we’re shooting this that feels very different.”

Isaac also spoke about J.J. Abrams returning to the director’s chair for the final installment of the Skywalker saga:

“It’s been really fun being back with J.J., with all of us working in a really close way. I just feel like there’s an element of almost senioritis, you know? Since everything just feels way looser and people aren’t taking it quite as seriously, but still just having a lot of fun. I think that that energy is gonna translate to a really great movie.”

The actor went on to praise how the film deals with Fisher and Leia’s legacy:

“It deals with the amazing character that Carrie created in a really beautiful way.”

Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Dominic Monaghan, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Mark Hamill.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20, 2019.
