As the nominees for this year's Academy Awards are announced, DC's 'Wonder Woman' is left out of the conversation completely.
The odds of the hit DC film getting a Best Picture nod were slim to begin with, but many fans were hopeful that director Patty Jenkins would get nominated for her beautiful work behind the camera. If not that, then one could surely make a strong case for Wonder Woman getting mentioned in the race for best production design, costume or at least one of the sound categories? But when the Oscar announcements were finally made this morning, not a single nomination.
Though it comes as a surprise that such a significant cultural touchstone was left out of this year’s Academy Awards, there is a silver lining for fans of comic book genre and genre filmmaking in general. Logan now holds the distinction of being the first comic book adaptation in history to earn a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Star Wars: The Last Jedi received four nominations across multiple technical categories, while Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was recognized for its achievements in visual effects.
