It was revealed recently during a financial call to discuss the company’s future that Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner revealed that Hasbro and Paramount Pictures are, at the moment, in talks to develop a new film based on the Power Rangers intellectual property. What wasn’t mentioned and is not known at the moment is whether this new film would have any relation to the 2017 film released by Lionsgate.
Again, while the 2017 Power Rangers movie has its fans, the movie was not what you’d call a smash at the box office. Given how much big studios look at the dollars first, it’s no surprise that a sequel is not in active development at the moment. So with that in mind, it would be understandable from the studio’s perspective if they wanted to start fresh. At the same time, it hasn’t been that long since Lionsgate’s film, so perhaps it would be best to continue on with a new start that already found some fans.
But that’s all speculation at the moment. The only news to report is that Hasbro and Paramount are talking about a new Power Rangers film. That’s it. Whether it continues on with what the previous film started or starts anew is anyone’s guess.
What do you think, though? Would you want to see an all new Power Rangers film, or do you want to see the series continue with what was started in the 2017 movie? If not, where would you want to see a new attempt with the property go? Or, heck, maybe go the Lost Galaxy route and just continue the story with an all-new set of rangers, similar to what Super Sentai does each season. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
The film stars Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader, and Bryan Cranston. Here’s the official synopsis:
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Power Rangers is now available on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
