Patrick Stewart’s ‘Star Trek’ Picard Series Pilot Finds It’s Director

It seems that Patrick Stewart’s upcoming Star Trek Picard series is fully underway it has reportedly found its pilot’s director in TV veteran Hanelle Culpepper.

The name may not be one that you know but, in addition to directing the new Star Trek episode, Culpepper has an extensive resume that includes directing episodes of Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, Castle, Gotham, Lucifer, and The Flash as well an episode of Star Trek: Discovery. So it just may be safe to say that the Picard pilot is in good hands.

Star Trek producer veteran, Alex Kurtzman had nothing but positive things to say about the director and seemed to be thrilled to have her on upcoming series:

Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character. I’ve been a huge fan of her work since she started with us on Discovery, and she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.

Hopefully, this enthusiasm makes its way to the final product.

In his time as a lead member of the franchise, Patrick Stewart has appeared as the iconic Jean Luc-Picard in two show series and four feature-length films since first taking on the role in 1987. He appeared as a guest star in the spin-off, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine before appearing in the films. Patrick Stewart’s character was last seen in the 2002 film, Star Trek: Nemesis. Sadly it was not the most gracious of sendoffs for the iconic character. The film was sadly a box office disappointment, only earning $67M on a $60M budget and received mostly negative review from critics. Perhaps the upcoming series will provide a more gracious exit for one of the best captains to grace the science fiction genre.
