Patrick Stewart On If The X-Men Were To Fight The Avengers

There’s no escape from the influx of superhero movies that have taken over cinema in the past few years, and although there may be divisions such as DC versus Marvel, or even inter-studio catfights, one thing that fans can agree on is that the films are at their most enjoyable when they feature an ensemble. We’ve got the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which allows the comics’ most prominent characters to interact in what we recognise as a world not too different from our own; and the DC Extended Universe, which places iconic figures like Batman and Superman in scenarios fans have dreamed about seeing in live-action for decades. Spider-Man recently joined the Avengers in their family feud, but the next biggest franchise with super-powered individuals, the X-Men, are out on their own for the time being. We’ll have to wait until 20th Century Fox reaches some kind of accord with Marvel and Disney before there’s a chance of getting a brief but amusing standoff between Iron Man and Magneto.

One key person who would also be interested in seeing a spat between the Avengers and their fellow Marvel Comics inhabitants, the X-Men, is Patrick Stewart. He recently sat down with Comicbook.com to speak about the final outing of Wolverine, the grimly realistic Logan, and some big names were dropped. When asked whether he thought the Avengers or his home team, the X-Men, would win in a fight, Patrick Stewart joked:

“X-Men versus? I don’t know who the Avengers are.”

Patrick Stewart went on to say:

“Of course, I do. There’s no contest. Bring on Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Ian McKellen… We’ll sort them out.”

A clear challenge if ever there was one. Only the time will tell whether Patrick Stewart and his co-stars live up to his declaration, although if and when the studios make an agreement on merging the universes, it might be the younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and all the rest that are facing down the Avengers – who might have their own replacements by then too!

Logan will be released on March 3^rd in the US.
