Patrick Wilson Excited For The Future Of The DC Films Universe

Starting with 2013’s Man of Steel, Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe has had trouble finding its feet. Man of Steel received mixed reviews, and the next two films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, fared quite a bit worse critically despite being profitable at the box office. This year’s Wonder Woman was the first true success for the studio, but November’s Justice League proved a disappointment, leaving many to fear any momentum gained by Wonder Woman would be lost.

Despite Justice League underwhelming, however, the film does provide a glimmer of hope for future installments, which leaves much to be excited about for the DCEU. One person who remains excited is actor Patrick Wilson, who plays the main villain Orm/Ocean Master in next year’s Aquaman. Metro sat down with Patrick Wilson to talk about his upcoming film The Commuter, but the DCEU quickly came up. When asked about the backlash the DCEU films have received, Wilson turned to the directors of these films and the confidence behind them:

“As they say, there are a lot of different ways to skin a cat. Or to make a movie and a franchise. I can only speak on behalf of being an actor and having a relationship with the directors. As a fan, I sit back and see the choices that they make for directors and they are very strong, focused, individual directors and that takes confidence. It easy to hire someone that is just a yes man. And they’re certainly not, which is very exciting.”

Zack Snyder, David Ayer, Patty Jenkins, and James Wan have all been known for their distinct styles of filmmaking, which lends credence to Wilson’s comments. After Ayer’s Suicide Squad failed to make a critical splash, many assumed the DCEU was done for until Jenkins’ Wonder Woman showed there was plenty of life left in this cinematic universe after all. Now it looks to be Aquaman‘s turn to prove the naysayers wrong, and the Patrick Wilson has confidence they can do it.

Aquaman is currently slated to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
