Marvel Television is parting their ways with Netflix, with the streaming service canceling Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. The Punisher and Jessica Jones are sure to be next as Disney ramps up a streaming service of their own coming later this year. Disney+ will feature shows developed by Marvel Studios for the first time. A Loki series is the only one confirmed so far, but other shows with characters like Scarlet Witch, Winter Solider, and many more are rumored to be in the works as well.
The upcoming Fox merger will up Disney’s ownership in Hulu to 60%. Hulu is already the home of Marvel’s Runaways, with more Marvel content on the way. Marvel just announced they are developing MODOK, Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler, and Howard the Duck animated series for Hulu. Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum will executive produce Marvel’s MODOK with Jeph Loeb. Patton Oswalt is a notorious comic book fan and has played multiple characters on ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. In an interview with Marvel, Patton Oswalt revealed he will also provide the voice of MODOK in the upcoming animated series:
“I could not be more excited for you guys to see what we do with M.O.D.O.K. He’s the character I was, sadly, born to play.”
Executive producer Jordan Blum also teased what fans can expect in the MODOK series:
Who is M.O.D.O.K. to me? Well, you have to start at his creation. I find M.O.D.O.K. to be just as iconic as all the other classic Jack Kirby / Stan Lee collaborations. Kirby’s design is the stuff of nightmares yet he’s also somehow… slightly adorable? Stan Lee wrote him as this amazing flawed character, always being undone by his inflated ego and thin skin. Over the years he’s been portrayed as both a menace and a joke and I think our show is much more interested in exploring him as a human being. A human being who’s also a Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing! At the end of the day M.O.D.O.K. is a giant-headed, petulant, insecure, egomaniac with zero social skills. And I for one find that incredibly relatable.”
Are you excited for MODOK and Hulu’s animated Marvel shows? Comment below! In the meantime, check out Marvel’s Runaways, here is the Season 2 synopsis:
The Runaways have left their homes (and evil parents) behind and now have to learn to live on their own. As they scavenge for food, search for shelter, and take care of one another, our kids begin to realize that, for better or worse, they’re stuck with each other. And it’s up to them to take down PRIDE once and for all. But someone sent a mysterious message to Jonah… Is there a mole in the Runaways? Meanwhile PRIDE is focused on finding their children, and Jonah has his own dangerous plan in mind.
Marvel’s Runaways is executive produced by series showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C. and Gossip Girl) along with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s The Defenders). Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski will produce as well. Marvel’s Runaways is a co-production with ABC Signature Studios.
