Wonder Woman 1984 could be one of the most anticipated films on Warner Bros. and DC’s slate. The studio is also coming off the box office success of Aquaman and Shazam! is already earning positive reactions from early screenings. The DCEU is trending upwards and their approach appears to be changing under the leadership of Walter Hamada. The focus of the DCEU is to make great standalone films and not worry about connecting the universe, ala Fox’s X-Men franchise.
Despite Wonder Woman 1984 technically being a sequel, Patty Jenkins shared at San Diego Comic-Con last year she is only interested in making something new and unique. Producer Charles Roven talked more about Patty Jenkins approach with Vulture and compared it to standalone films like Indiana Jones and James Bond:
“She was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash–Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling. Even though it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humor, a lot of brave action. Tugs at the heart strings as well. It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many installments.”
