The history of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one that is as chaotic as it was successful. The initial film was one that fought a constant uphill battle to be made but eventually turned into one of the year’s best films and helped turn star Johnny Depp into one of Hollywood’s biggest names. Unfortunately the success of both the franchise and it’s star have wained in the 17 years since its release.
The film’s first three sequels were all massive money makers but failed to wow the critics the same way the first film had. The film’s latest entry,
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was the lowest-grossing of these sequels and was panned by critics. While a 6th film is in development, it will reportedly be a reboot of the franchise. Whether or not the franchise will continue without Johnny Depp, however, is a question that no one seems able to answer.
While speaking to Collider, the subject of the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot was brought up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In it, he revealed that they had been working on a draft for a new film and had been at it for quite some time:
“We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”
Later on, he admitted that they weren’t sure what role Johnny Depp would have in the upcoming Pirates film:
“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be. So, we’re going to have to see.”
