‘Planet Of The Apes 4’ Director Says Production Could Start Soon

Planet of the Apes 4 director Wes Ball has teased that production for the upcoming entry to the longrunning franchise could start relatively soon.

The Planet of the Apes franchise is, of course, one of the longest-running franchises in history. It originally started out as a 1963 novel before being adapted into the classic 1968 film. The film went on to spawn four direct sequels of varying quality and remained dormant for nearly thirty years.

In 2001, Tim Burton’s remake of Planet of the Apes was released. While the film grossed well over $300M worldwide, it received a mixed reception from critics and fans, and Fox opted not to move forward on a sequel. Ten years later the first in a reboot trilogy for the franchise, starring Andy Serkis, titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released. It and its sequels Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes were both well received by critics and all three films were box office hits.

Since the Disney buyout of Fox, the company been determining what to do with the franchise. A new film with Maze Runner director Wes Ball is currently in the works but it may be closer to the start of its production then anyone may have guessed. While speaking to Discussing Film, the upcoming film’s director teased that because most of the film would be CG, virtual production for the film could start fairly soon:

“We have a giant art team cranking away on some incredible concept art. We’ve got the screenplay continuing to move forward, that will take the time that it takes, and so that’s all good. Planet of the Apes is moving forward, baby! Not only that, but we could actually be in virtual production relatively soon because it’s largely a CG movie.”
