Pokemon Fans Are Upset Over Strange ‘Detective Pikachu’ German Trailer Dub

Pokemon fans who have watched the German dub of the Detective Pikachu trailer are upset at one particularly strange moment.

The Detective Pikachu trailer debuted recently and it has elicited reactions from all over the emotional spectrum. Some fans are excited to see the characters so perfectly animated in live-action, some love how weird and out-of-left-field it looks, but not everyone is excited. Others have found the film to be more in the vein of The Smurfs, especially with the antics between Justice Smith’s character and Pikachu, who is voiced by Ryan Reynolds. It’s a normal response a trailer as strange as Detective Pikachu but one thing that all fans seem to agree on is that the German trailer is strange in its own way.

Not like “Ryan Reynolds is voicing Pikachu” strange, but more so in a way that some Pokemon fans have found insulting to the franchise. It turns out that in the German trailer for the film, Pikachu saying the iconic “Pika Pika” has been redubbed by another voice, whereas the rest of the international trailers have kept the voice of Ikue Otani, who has provided her voice to the character many times over the last 20 years. Check out the video in the Twitter post below and see for yourself if it’s as weird as some Pokemon fans are saying.

As you can see in the footage above, many of the other trailers have kept Otani’s voice while the German trailer decided to dub over the moment with a vastly different voice. The reason behind the dub is unclear but Pokemon fans have already voiced their annoyance via social media. If the film is released in Germany with that voiceover, it will definitely make for a fascinating watch for fans who have already seen the film.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Detective Pikachu as soon as more information becomes available. Do you think that the final cut will feature the same dub in Germany? Is that a cut you’d like to see or would you rather it be fixed to show respect to Otani? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Detective Pikachu will target a May 10, 2019 release date. Directed by Rob Letterman, the film stars Ryan Reynolds as the title character, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton.
