That Cold Opening
Alright, I already went on at length about that cold opening, but it’s so good, I have to talk about it a little more. With an incredible eye for the time and place, and with a patient, weary sense of self seen in the best Westerns, it’s a magnificent piece of work, and one that, like I said before, I wish lasted a little longer. The eight-minute sequence is gripping, thoughtful, vengeful and bleak as anything you’ll see on TV at 9 PM. It’s quietly powerful, it’s absorbingly haunting and it grabs you by the throat, the hair and the balls, for that matter. It holds on tight and refuses to let go, and it only leaves you wanting more, more, more. The Old West is not a good place, but this is a damn excellent moment in an often-good series, and it shows just how transcendent Preacher can be in the right hands.
