Despite releasing later this year, not much news has been released on Gambit thus far as the film remains in the pre-production stage.
Gambit is the second character from the widely panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine to receive his own spin-off, and 20th Century Fox is taking the same approach they’re taking with Deadpool by creating a film that stays a little truer to the source material. Producer Simon Kinberg, who refers to the X-Men spin-off as “a sexy PG-13 heist film,” notes that actor Channing Tatum is a huge fan of the comic books and will be doing his best to emulate the character in a way that fans should appreciate. Says Kinberg:
“Channing is a big fan of the comic, so the accent, the attitude, the costume in many ways, will be in the film. And he’s a character with a complex backstory—we’re playing him as a thief in the film, and that’s a big part of the story.”
The bit about the costume is particularly interesting. Like many superheroes, Gambit has had more than one look over the course of his run. The one for which he is perhaps known best is one that involves quite a bit of pink. It’s hard to picture the character wearing too many bright colors in the middle of a heist, but Gambit’s powers also don’t require him to go the stealth route. At this stage, there’s really no telling what sort of costumes the creative team has in mind for the character.
Gambit is currently slated for release on October 17. Hopefully, that means it won’t be too long before we get some new info on the Cajun hero’s first cinematic solo outing.
