Nuclear Physics Professor Calls ‘Avengers 4’ Proton Cannon Impractical

In a recent conversation with Inverse, a Nuclear Physics Professor called the rumored Avengers 4 Proton Cannon to be impractical.

Last week the image of what appeared to be some kind of engine or cannon appeared from the set of the latest Avengers film. Some immediately began to speculate that it was going to be Tony Stark’s Proton Cannon that he has used in various places but most notably in the Marvel vs. Capcom video games. But when the image was shown to an actual scientist, she called it impractical.

According to Ani Aprahamian, Ph.D, the actual energy would disperse before it could deal any real damage:

A lot depends on the energy of the proton beam maybe one meter in air. Hard to do a cannon like that.

It is worth noting, however, that the doctor is talking about the cannon in practical, real world terms. The kind of technology Tony Stark has access to and develops in the films is decades beyond what we are currently capable of. It is also worth noting that the entirety of the conversation between Inverse and Doctor Aprahamian was not posted, so it is very possible that their is some context that we are missing.

What do you all make of this? Has this, in your mind, debunked the Proton Cannon theory? Is this just a case of science wasting its valuable time to debunk movie theories? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Avengers 4 is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. Much of the cast of Infinity War is expected to return including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as well as Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin.

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
