While talking with Collider, actor Jason R. Moore believed that the show would never make it to the screen. Moore, who plays Frank Castle’s friend, Curtis Hoyle, had doubts about the show’s future due to the mass shooting in Las Vegas only a few weeks prior. Because of this shooting, the big New York Comic Con preview for The Punisher was canceled and many have speculated that its release date pushed back due to the tragedy.
Because of the shooting, Moore wasn’t even sure that the first season would ever be aired, let alone make it past the first season:
I thought it was a wrap. Because trailers had come out that’s like, dude, it’s a gun shooting a lady in the head. That’s what you see. I’m very sensitive to the political climate. So I was just like, ‘I gotta’ start looking for a job.’
Thankfully for Punisher fans, that did not happen.
While the first season drew mixed reviews from critics, fans of the character met the show with approval. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score for the series currently sits at a 93% approval rating with an IMDb user score that rates around 8.6/10. This, however, may not be enough to save the show in the long term.
The second season of the show is set to debut sometime in January but many fear that this may be the last season. After the unexpected cancellation of Luke Cage and Daredevil, it would not be a stretch to assume that Marvel may be trying to clear out its content so it won’t have to compete with Disney’s upcoming streaming service. For the time being, however, all we can do is wait and see how Netflix handles this latest season of The Punisher.
The Punisher Season 2 stars Jon Bernthal, Ben Barnes, Amber Rose Revah, Jason R. Moore, Josh Stewart, Floriana Lima, and Giorgia Whigham.
After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.
The Punisher Season 2 releases on Netflix in January.
