‘The Punisher’ Season 2 Will Focus On Frank Castle Adopting Comic Book Mantle

Seems that Frank Castle will start adopting and embracing the comic book mantle of The Punisher when the Marvel Netflix series returns for its second season this January.

Frank Castle isn’t your traditional protagonist. The most he has for a costume is the skull on his shirt. But despite the show’s title and what many in New York refer to him as, Castle does not refer to himself as “The Punisher.” Except for his court outburst during the second season of Daredevil where he proudly called himself “the big bad Punisher,” Frank Castle is just Frank Castle. However, during Collider’s set visit for the second season of the series, showrunner Steve Lightfoot stated that Frank adopting the mantle will tie into the season’s theme:

“If you ask, ‘What is the theme of season 2?’ It’s about Frank really adopting the mantle of The Punisher.”

Indeed, while Frank Castle may merely see himself as a veteran or man looking to clean up New York, he hasn’t taken on or encouraged the name of The Punisher since his time on Daredevil. And on his own series, he never refers to himself as such, either. But it seems that, based on Lightfoot’s admission and where this second season could take Frank Castle, it could finally be time for him to fully adopt that mantle.

After all, Matt Murdock sees himself as The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Luke Cage is Harlem’s Hero. Danny Rand is The Immortal Iron Fist. Jessica Jones is…well, Jessica Jones. Perhaps Frank Castle will be the one to break tradition and fully take on his comic mantle. What do you think, though? Do you see Castle referring to himself as The Punisher going forward? Let us know your thoughts on this and more in the comments below.

Marvel’s The Punisher stars Jon Bernthal, Ben Barnes, Amber Rose Revah, Jason R. Moore, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Daniel Webber, Paul Schulze, Michael Nathanson, Jaime Ray Newman, and Deborah Ann Woll.

The second season will air on Netflix in January.
