In season one of The Punisher, fans were introduced to the antagonist Billy Russo. Fans of the comics anticipated Russo’s eventual transformation into the scarred villain Jigsaw and during the season one climax, they got exactly that. The finale of the series left Russo horribly scarred which seemed like the perfect transition into the Jigsaw persona.
As it turns out, fans won’t be getting the Marvel villain in Russo that they were expecting when season two arrives on Netflix. In a recent article from Collider, it was revealed that Russo will not be referred to as Jigsaw throughout the entirety of season two. Actor Ben Barnes did clarify that there would be a more metaphorical use of the term Jigsaw instead of him donning it as a nickname. This is what Barnes had to say about the character in season two.
“He’s trying to piece together what happened to him and who he is. There is the metaphor at one point that his brain is the jigsaw that he’s trying put the pieces back together of.”
In season two, Russo will be going through quite a few changes, physically and mentally. When season two begins, he is still recovering from his brutal battle with Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) at the end of season one. He will be dealing with brain damage that results in memory issues and will even adopt a new hairstyle. Season two will find Billy Russo shaved and scarred to realistically match his last fight with Frank. In the article, it also notes that Barnes compared Russo’s vulnerability this season to Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) in season one of Daredevil. Supergirl‘s Floriana Lima will also be joining this new season of The Punisher as Russo’s psychotherapist Krista.
