‘Punisher’ Showrunner Reveals Show Didn’t Originally Include Karen Page

After appearing in both seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders on Netflix, it is safe to say that the character of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) has been keeping herself pretty busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the former Nelson & Murdock secretary is set to appear in next month’s The Punisher,  the series’s showrunner reveals that her inclusion in the show wasn’t originally in the cards.

In a report from Mashable, The Punisher showrunner Steve Lightfoot divulges that Page’s cross over into the upcoming Marvel series was due to the uncanny chemistry between Woll’s performance as Page with the titular antihero Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal):

“I asked to have her, because she and Frank [Castle] are so great. Frank is a closed-off military guy, and this is a woman he treats like an equal more than anyone else.”

The showrunner also spoke of how The Punisher’s initial length of thirteen episodes will allow him to delve into the hardened military past of Castle and how his previous tenure as a member of the United States Special Forces will play a critical role to the character’s psyche:

“This is an opportunity for me to write something in the action [genre], but also touch on issues around soldiers and veterans. Grief is something we all can identify with, and it’s about this guy coming back from war dealing with grief.”
