News of the decaying viewership of the potential last season of The Punisher on Netflix came today from Business Insider. The journal received the statistics from analytics company Jumpshot which revealed that 40% of the people that saw the show’s first season on its first weekend, didn’t come back for the premiere weekend of the second one.
Although the show has received praise from fans, it seems critics didn’t enjoy it as much. Season two of The Punisher puts Frank Castle in a completely new scenario after exacting his vengeance in Daredevil season two and the first season of the show, which was created after the huge impact the character had against Daredevil. Although with Billy Russo/Jigsaw still in the background after the first season’s finale and Castle’s proclivity to getting into trouble, season two pulled off enough material to become a reality.
It was also revealed that Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil also saw their numbers plummeting in the same regard according to the information revealed in the article. Luke Cage saw a drop in 63% of the viewership from the season one premiere weekend to the season two premiere weekend. Iron Fist saw a drop in 69% in this case as well. What was even more surprising is that viewership also fell for Daredevil from season 2 to season 3 in 61%.
In hindsight, numbers actually show that the drop of The Punisher wasn’t that bad at all. The argument can be made that since Marvel is moving out of Netflix on to Dinsey+, fans are less interested to watch content that won’t have the possibility of keep going on. Netflix has already a ton of content between series, movies, and documentaries that people may be attracted to, like franchises that actually have the possibility of new seasons or a follow-up film.
